Banks cut back consumer credit in fear of rising risks – Telegraph.co.uk

Howard Archer at the EY Item Club, said: “The Bank of England has warned that banks risk becoming complacent in their lending behaviour so it should take some comfort from banks reportedly tightening their lending standards for granting unsecured consumer credit.”

He added that it remains to be seen how much of an effect the Bank of England’s interest rate hike at the start of November will have in “dampening impact on consumers’ willingness to borrow”.

“Given these trends, these figures showing reduced lending are welcome. However, we are all too aware that reducing the supply of credit is not the same as reducing demand,” said Jane Tully from the Money Advice Trust, which runs the National Debtline.

The policymakers discussed the risk that “a gap appeared to be emerging between favourable economic conditions and a policy stance that remained in a crisis configuration,” though they concluded that any move to end QE should only happen slowly.

He said: “While the increase was just 25 basis points and interest rates are still at historically very low levels, there could well have been a significant psychological impact on potential borrowers given that it was the first interest rate hike since 2007.”

It follows a series of warnings from Mark Carney that annual growth of 10pc in lending could leave borrowers overstretched and the banks vulnerable to a slump.

Banks have stopped seeking greater market share in consumer credit, and expect to cut back their positions relative to other lenders in the first three months of 2017.
