The first half was back and forth with nine ties and nine lead changes. Michigan had a pair of five-point leads, the last coming after a Charles Matthews layup with 8:48 to play that made it 23-18.

Michigan State is off until Friday, Jan. 19, when Indiana visits the Breslin Center.

Like the first half, the lead bounced back and forth, with UM taking a 54-49 lead before MSU scored six-straight points to take a 55-54 lead after a pair of Jackson Jr. free throws. Michigan responded with an 11-2 run and took a 65-57 lead on a jumper from Zavier Simpson with 5:05 to play.

MSU led by three points, 37-34, at the break and took its biggest lead just seconds into the second half on free throws from Jackson Jr. at the 19:44 mark. Michigan responded with an 8-0 run and took a 42-39 lead on a dunk from Isaiah Livers. The Spartans countered back and took a 44-42 lead on a conventional three-point play from Jackson Jr. with 15:23 to play.

The Spartans cut the gap to four points after a three-point play from Jackson Jr., 65-61, but the Wolverines pushed the lead back to eight points after a layup from Matthews with 2:29 to play.

MSU trailed, 32-29, with 4:11 to play before starting a late run to take the lead. Six-straight points – free throws from Gavin Schilling and Winston and a jumper from Winston – gave MSU a 35-32 lead. The Wolverines cut it to 35-34 but a dunk from Schilling with 41 seconds left gave the Spartans a three-point lead at the break.
