Britain’s The Independent cited local Spanish media, which reported employees at the morgue at the Legal Medicine Institute of La Corredoria heard Gonzalo Montoya Jiménez snoring from inside his body bag as they prepared to conduct his autopsy. They rushed him to a hospital where he was recovering.
Jan. 8 (UPI) — Authorities in Spain launched an investigation after a prisoner whom three doctors declared dead later woke up in a morgue hours before his autopsy.
Montoya’s family members told La Voz de Asturias, cited by the BBC, that they saw markings on his body in preparation for the autopsy when they viewed his body.
His family questioned why three prison doctors were led to believe the 50-year-old was dead Saturday. Medical sources told Spain’s Telecinco it may have been a case of catalepsy, when a patient’s vital signs slow to the point of being undetectable.
