Caution, Iron Deficiency Affects Child Development

KOMPAS.com – Experts remind that lack of iron in children should not be underestimated. Because, this is very influential at times child development in the long run.

Based on data from the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas), one in three Indonesian children under five years of age (toddlers) is recorded to have experienced it anemia. Where 50-60 percent of the anemia is due to iron deficiency.

This is considered worrying because this health issue has a long-term impact on children’s growth and development and of course affects the quality of Indonesia’s golden generation.

President of the Indonesian Nutrition Association (INA) as well as a Clinical Nutrition Specialist, Dr. dr Luciana B Susanto MS SpGK said that apart from anemia, iron deficiency can cause children to lack concentration and focus and difficulty socializing.

In fact, in Indonesia, it is known that 1 in 3 children have anemia.

Lack of iron in children has the potential to inhibit cognitive, motor, sensosrik and social growth of children. Luciana explained that iron is an element of red blood cells.

If a person is deficient in iron, the red blood cells that are produced will be imperfect or small and pale.

“For the beginning (iron deficiency) anemia was not found first, but it can be seen from the laboratory examination that the red blood cells hemoglobin is small and pale. So, anemia can be found in the next examination,” he explained.

To note, anemia is not the same as low blood pressure or lack of blood.
