It is estimated that over 2 million households will have to replace their TV sets or set-top boxes. They do not support the DVB-T2 standard or the HEVC codec. According to Mirosław Kalinowski, director of the National Media Institute, these are elderly people who need to be reached directly.
– Contacting them via the Internet may not bring the expected results and probably the only way, apart from building a very simple message, is to contact them using very classic methods. With posters at the post office or in parishes, where we will show clearly what they can do – said Kalinowski during the conference of the Digital Poland Association and the National Broadcasting Council devoted to DVB-T2 / HEVC.
Polish Television letter to the parish?
The idea of the head of KIM was picked up by Marcin Klepacki, director of the TVP distribution office. – I heard a brilliant thing today, that is parishes. Due to the fact that we have a Catholic editorial office, we will probably manage these channels somehow. The question is whether I, as a representative of the public broadcaster, am right here. Not that I cannot do it, but I do not know if it is an institution that should implement this idea. It will boil down to the fact that we are not going to do something as television, but a poster would have to be printed, which will appear in the display cases next to the parishes. I suppose we will not train vicars in parishes on what to say from the pulpit. Rather, we will prepare it in the form of some written communication – said Klepacki.
A letter to the parish is not the only action planned by TVP. – We’ll probably be setting up our helpline. The uprising is not intended for people using the Internet, but for the elderly. They will be able to call and check whether a given device meets the DVB-T2 / HEVC criteria – Klepacki announced. In addition, a special channel is to be launched, thanks to which viewers will be able to check whether their TV set supports the HEVC codec. There are TV sets on the market that support DVB-T2, but do not support the HEVC codec. – I do not know if we will make it before the end of the year, but we plan to launch it on the third multiplex with a range of 98%. the population of a simple board channel encoded in HEVC standard. If someone sees the board and hears the sound, it means that he has a HEVC compatible TV set. If he only hears the sound, one of the variants of not seeing is that he has to replace the TV set – explained Klepacki.
Delayed TVP decoder
Telewizja Polska planned to offer its own Internet-terrestrial set-top box at the beginning of 2022. Today it is already known that the project will be delayed. The decoder “will not happen at the time it was supposed to happen”. The main problem is the availability of chips. The largest hardware manufacturers have these chips, so televisions are available on the market. We are not able to “prove it in business” at that time. This burden falls on the suppliers of TV sets – noted the director of the TVP distribution office.
Changing the digital terrestrial television standard to DVB-T2 / HEVC will improve the quality of broadcasting channels. As we recently informed, Telewizja Polska plans to broadcast all stations in HD quality. The reactivated TVP 4K channel will be available in 4K.
– The strategic goal of the Company is to provide viewers with the signal of all its programs, at least in high definition (HD). Today, as the only broadcaster on digital terrestrial television, Telewizja Polska provides its program in HD quality on 5 antennas: TVP1, TVP2, TVP Info, TVP Sport and TVP Kultura. Ultimately, after changing the broadcasting standard, planned for the middle of next year, and if the number of seats allocated to TVP in multiplexes allows it, we plan that the entire programming offer available there should be at least HD quality., having also plans to broadcast a program of the highest commercially available Ultra HD quality – 4K – revealed the TVP Information Center to the Wirtualnemedia.pl portal. TVP also plans to launch a terrestrial digital platform with a 4K channel.
