TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Chairman of the PKS DPP for Farmers and Fishermen, Riyono, regretted the statement by President Joko Widodo alias Jokowi regarding rice imports. Jokowi said that throughout 2021, there will be no government rice imports because the domestic food supply is still sufficient.
In fact, according to Riyono, there are still rice imports of around 41,600 tons or the equivalent of US$ 18 million until July 2021, according to data from the Central Statistics Agency. Apart from that, there was an uproar about plans to import 1.5 million tons of rice in May, which caused public criticism.
“Where will the president get the news and data if until November there are no imports?” he said in a written statement, Wednesday, December 1, 2021.
He said Jokowi’s statement showed poor coordination between institutions and the government. Furthermore, Riyono said that PKS from the beginning refused to import rice.
He saw that the issue of rice imports hurt farmers. Farmers, he said, had contributed to food security and boosted economic growth in the midst of the pandemic.
According to Riyono, the condition of national rice noted that rice production continues to increase. During 2020, dry milled grain (GKG) production reached 54.65 million tons, an increase of 0.08 percent or 45,170 tons from 2019 production of 54.60 million tons.
“If converted into rice, throughout 2020 rice production will reach 31.33 million tons. This realization increased slightly by 0.07 percent or 21,460 tons from rice production in 2019 which amounted to 31.31 million tons,” he said.
