This is the website that pollutes the most: it generates 702,000 tons of carbon per year | Technology

According to a study by the WebSiteToolTester portal, which reviews more than 200 home pages among the most visited sites in the world, the most polluting websites are those of YouTube, Netflix, Twitter y Amazon.

The person in charge of the contents of WebSiteToolTester, Josep García, explains that the contamination is due to “The great demand for electricity from the servers on which the internet portals depend.”

YouTube, the most polluting

This is the case, for example, of Netflix which, due to the breadth of its content and its high number of users, generates more than 24,000 tons of carbon annually “only from visits to its website”, without taking into account interactions with its mobile application.

During the global confinement this amount multiplied and “was significantly higher than other years.”

However, this streaming platform is not the site with the highest carbon footprint, since the most polluting is YouTube. With millions of videos, live broadcasts or reproduction of musical themes, its contribution shoots up to 702,000 tons per year.


Google, despite being one of the “cleanest” portals among those studied, generates 267,000 tons due to the enormous number of users who use it every day. Of course, this amount does not include the impact of services such as your mail server Gmail or the video conferencing Meet.

Even greater is the pollution generated by pages with “adult content” due to the large amount of traffic they support. Thus, the Xvideos website alone supposes the emission of more than 25,000 tons.

As for social media, Twitter tops the list by releasing 58,000 tonnes of carbon grams per year, followed by Facebook with 49,000 tons. Of the online shopping platforms, the most polluting by far is Amazon, which produces 93,000 tons per year, of which about a third, about 27,000 tons, is generated by its Spanish version.

Optimize and simplify

Solve the problem of carbon footprint in the use of Internet It is not easy, given that today’s industry, commerce, leisure and relationships are increasingly based on the digital world.

However, as García has indicated, its impact can be limited, for example “Reducing the weight of the images and optimizing them.”


By compressing its quality, its weight is also reduced, which, in turn, demands a “lower performance” from the servers and therefore a lower energy consumption.

Another measure goes through “Simplify the code of web pages”. In fact, to create a site as close as possible to energy neutrality, it is necessary to ensure that its content loads quickly and that the user experience is optimized, since the easier it is for them to find what they are looking for, fewer pages will need to load.
