Faisal Rachman, an economist at Bank Mandiri, assessed that export performance was still quite good amid the challenges of the corona virus pandemic (Coronavirus Disease-2019/Covid-19). Moreover, there is the threat of the delta variant of the corona virus which is much more easily transmitted than before. The delta variant has now spread to more than 100 countries and has caused an increase in both positive cases and deaths.

“Demand from major trading partner countries is still strong. In addition, the increase in commodity prices, especially coal, has also greatly helped Indonesia’s exports,” said Faisal in his research.

Throughout August 2021, the price of coal in the ICE Newcastle (Australia) market shot up 11.29% point-to-point. At the end of last month, the price of the black stone was at US$ 170/ton, well above the position at the end of August 2020, which was US$ 52.75/ton.
