KONTAN.CO.ID – WASHINGTON D.C. Donald Trump would not be his name if he did not make controversial comments. This time the president called for a boycott of tire products from the Goodyear company.
Through his official Twitter account, Trump said that Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. had banned the use of campaign attributes for himself.
“Don’t buy Goodyear tires – They announced a ban on MAGA hats,” Trump wrote in his teaser on Wednesday (19/8) local time.
Don’t buy GOODYEAR TIRES – They announced a BAN ON MAGA HATS. Get better tires for far less! (This is what the Radical Left Democrats do. Two can play the same game, and we have to start playing it now!). — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 19, 2020
The MAGA hat itself refers to Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again”. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. does prohibit the use of any campaign attributes within its company.
Launch Reuters, shares of Goodyear, which is North America’s biggest tire company, fell 4% after Trump’s tweet emerged.
To date, Goodyear is still the largest tire supplier for new vehicles in the United States. In 2018, Tire Business reported that at least 24% of new vehicles in the US used Goodyear tires.
The White House has yet to comment on Trump’s mockery of asking his followers not to buy tires from Goodyear.
Trump’s taunts allegedly surfaced after reports of a Goodyear training session from his Ohio headquarters.
In the coverage, Goodyear talks about the attributes that can and should not be used by employees.
One presentation appendix shows that the attributes of the campaign, including Trump’s MAGA campaign, are unacceptable.
In a statement given to WIBW, Goodyear said that it upheld equality, but politics was not part of it.
Goodyear considers that the regulation is an effort to maintain an inclusive and respectful work environment.
“We allow employees to express support for racial injustice and other issues of equality. However, we ask that they refrain from expressing support and political campaigns for any candidate or political party,” Goodyear spokesperson Melissa Monaco told WIBW. quoted from Reuters.
