This weekend a new edition of the South American Women’s Rugby Seven Valentín Martínez, which will be held on Uruguayan soil, and for Las Cóndores it will be historic.
The above, because for the first time in the history of national rugby a woman will lead a National Team.
Is about Ursula Alvarez, who this Saturday and next Sunday will have the difficult challenge of installing the Chilean team at the top of South American rugby.
In addition to Chile, in Montevideo the combined Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay will see action.
But who is Úrsula Álvarez? He belongs to the Garumas de Antofagasta club and has participated for months in the South American Rugby Academy (SAR), aimed at high-performance coaches.
In addition, the DT has been in charge of the selected city of Antofagasta for three years, so this tournament will be the opportunity to put into practice what has been learned during this last time.
“It is an opportunity for all women”
Asked about her stellar role in the Valentín Martínez tournament, Álvarez stressed that this tremendous opportunity will not only open doors for her, but also for all the women who are part of this sport.
“I am very happy with the challenge. It is a very important opportunity not only for me but also for all the women who are working for the development of women’s rugby ”, said the coach.
“I have felt very supported by Edmundo Olfos (DT of Los Cóndores) in this first process and by SAR at the Academy. I’m super happy to be the first and for new doors to open, ”added Álvarez.
Úrsula also commented on her years working with the selected women from Antofagasta, highlighting how much she has learned in the position.
“I was leading, along with other coaches in the region, the development of women and I had the opportunity to work a couple of years ago with Rafael Torres, head coach of Antofagasta. He came from Tucumán and we made several tours with international courses, ”explained DT.
The one who had words for Álvarez’s challenge was Edmundo Olfos, who accompanied her in these weeks of training before traveling to Uruguay.
“We want to give the experience to a woman who is projected. We trust her and the team that accompanies her, ”said the coach.
The iconic Valentín Martínez
But Álvarez’s task in Montevideo will not be easy. Las Cóndores left a very good impression in the 2019 edition and the intention is to improve the last season.
Last year, the Chileans finished in sixth place after victories over Uruguay (33-0 and 54-5) and a loss to Brazil (0-40) in the group stage.
They then beat Guatemala 31-0 and ended up losing in the 5th place match against Peru, with a score of 0-31.
Gissel Castañeada, one of the 14 selected for the tournament, commented with Rugby Chile what they hope to achieve in the 2020 edition of the traditional women’s Sevens competition.
“Most haven’t set foot on a rugby pitch in months, so going back to rugby was a great incentive, motivation and injection of energy for everyone. I think this makes the atmosphere and spirit of the team very good, ”said the Vobgs player.
“We are very anxious and eager for him to leave soon. We only hope to have a great tournament, to play our game and to be able to capture what the staff proposes to us, ”he added.
It is worth mentioning that Las Cóndores debut this Saturday at 10:00 am, facing Colombia. The entire tournament can be seen through the SAR app.
