With the novelty introduced in Speedtest for Android, you can find out if your mobile phone and your Internet connection support 4K content streaming. It is very useful if you are considering improving your subscription, too if you want to change operator and you need to know the maximum quality of its services.
A few years ago it was not very common to play streaming content on the phone, but the increase in gigas of rates, apart from the improvements in speed of the infrastructures, has made watching Netflix, Disney +, HBO or Amazon Prime Video on smartphone is something quite common. Playing the content has no greater mystery, but the quality at which it will be downloaded is not so clear; hence Speedtest is so useful.
The speed test that tells you the maximum resolution at which you can play video
We do not need to introduce Speedtest because surely you know it well: is one of the most popular web pages when conducting a connection speed test. Developed by Ookla, Speedtest not only has a web, it also offers access from mobile phones thanks to its applications. These have a not very well known option: the video test.
Speedtest introduced the aforementioned video test in its apps for iOS last February 2021; lagging so far in the case of Android. Its purpose is simple: find out the maximum streaming resolution the internet connection reaches. Whether you are going to play content on your mobile or you are going to watch it on TV: with Speedtest you can analyze the behavior of the network that reaches your home.
To analyze the video capabilities of your connection you must do the following:
- If you didn’t already have Speedtest on your Android, you can download it from Google Play.
- Open the app and go to the “Video” tab, in the lower menu.
- Click on the “Play” icon and Speedtest will download different videos with different resolutions and codecs.
- After the analysis, the application will tell you what the maximum capacities of your connection are in terms of video resolution.
You can use the data thrown by the app as a guide to subscribe to the plans premium platforms, as with Netflix. Since to watch 4K you have to pay the maximum monthly payment, make sure your home gets enough speed and bandwidth. You can check it using Speedtest while you connect to the WiFi, it also helps you to know if your mobile operator is suitable in the event that you want to use a router with a SIM card, for example.
The data provided by Speedtest are indicative, the network capacity is variable and not all platforms offer identical download speeds. Our recommendation is that perform different tests, especially at the most saturated hours of the day (between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.). And be very careful with doing them over the mobile network if you do not have a comfortable rate: each test can consume up to 500 MB.
